Chapter 1
“Hey honey, are you done packing?” Bridget balanced her cellphone between her ear and her shoulder. “Check-in is tomorrow. They have some sort of get together that sounds like a lot of fun, so let’s make sure we get there as early as possible.”
The silence on the other end was deafening and Bridget’s hands stalled.
“Honey?”
Kyle sighed. “Baby…”
She shut her eyes tight. Not again. Not this time. “Don’t.”
“It’s not my fault.”
Fury swirled in her gut, threatening to overthrow her entire body. “This has been planned for over six months. You promised.” She shifted the phone to her hand and gripped it tight. “We’re not even going that far. It’s a forty-minute drive.”
“It’s a week-long thing, Bridget. I can’t take off work that long.”
She wanted to argue with him, point out that this had been his idea. Kyle had wanted to do something special for her after he’d been prioritizing his work so much around the holidays. She could have whined and tried to manipulate him into keeping his promise.
But that wasn’t who she was.
Gritting her teeth, she paced her bedroom. Her bags were packed. The trip was already paid for. She’d won the romantic getaway on the radio. Maybe she should go anyway.
“I promise I’ll make it up to—”
“Whatever, Kyle. This is what you do.” Her voice held less bite and more resolve. “Stay here. Work. But I’m going anyway.”
“What? You can’t be serious. Who are you going with?”
“I don’t know. Maybe I’ll go by myself.”
He laughed and that sound made her feel—small. She hated it. “You realize that the only people going to Sweet Paradise Resort this week will all be coupled up. All the activities are planned specifically to be romantic. Do you really want to draw that kind of attention?”
Shoot.
Kyle was right.
Tears burned behind her eyes. She should have known better than to trust that Kyle would follow through on something like this. When was the last time he’d put her first? She honestly couldn’t remember.
She shouldn’t even be crying right now. It was ridiculous. He’d made his decision. Wiping at her tears with a rough hand, she took a deep breath. “You’re right, Kyle. I won’t go alone.”
“Wait, what are you saying?”
“I’ll go with someone else.”
“Who?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
He cursed. “It does too, matter. I’m your boyfriend—”
“Not anymore.”
Kyle sputtered his argument, excuses, anything he could to get her to change her mind but she wasn’t having any of it. Without giving him another thought, she hung up the phone.
It wasn’t surprising that he tried to call her back.
Several times.
Each and every time, she ignored the call.
Then she called the one person she’d always been able to count on.
“Hey, Sweetness,” Foster purred. “What is my favorite girl up to this fine evening? You all packed for your romantic getaway?”
Words stuck in her throat.
A beep echoed in her ear, indicating that Kyle was trying to call her again.
“Sweetness? Bridget, what’s wrong?” Foster’s voice was gruffer this time and the sound in the background faded. It was only at that moment she noticed.
“Are you at a party?” she sniffled.
“What happened?” Foster’s sharp voice made her smile despite her current situation. “Do I need to fly out there and put someone in their place?” He didn’t have to say Kyle’s name. They both knew who he was referring to.
“It’s fine,” she whimpered.
“No it’s not. What did he do?”
She let out a strangled laugh. “Oh, he’s just being Kyle. You know him.” She couldn’t hear the sound of people or music in the background any longer. “I’m sorry. Did I interrupt something? It sounded like you were busy.”
“You know you can call me anytime and I’ll pick up. Tell me what’s going on so I know how much I need to hate the guy this time.”
Bridget sighed and collapsed onto her bed. She stared up at the ceiling with a frown. “He’s putting his work first again.”
Foster grumbled something unintelligible. “He’s not good enough for you, Sweetness.”
She rolled her eyes. “So you’ve said a hundred times.”
“And I’ll say it a hundred times more until you get it. Please tell me it’s over. For good this time.”
Bridget shut her eyes against the reality of her situation. “Yeah, it’s over.”
“For good?”
She grimaced. How many times had she gotten fed up with Kyle only for him to grovel and win her back? Honestly, she’d lost track. The guy was good at groveling. Their first big fight had ended when he’d bought her six dozen roses and showed up in the rain to plead for her to take him back. The second time, he’d gotten her a promise ring. The third? She couldn’t even remember the gift he’d gotten her.
Kyle made his apologies with lavish gifts and pretty words. And she was a sucker for it.
“Yeah,” she whispered. “For good.”
The quiet on the other end said more than Foster’s words ever could. He didn’t believe her. Heck, she wasn’t sure she believed herself. She was one sweet gesture away from letting Kyle back into her heart.
Time and distance.
That was what she needed.
“So what now? Your getaway starts tomorrow. Are you still going to go?”
“I don’t know,” she groaned. “I want to.”
“So do it.”
She sat up, frowning at her packed suitcase. “But it’s a romantic getaway. I can’t show up by myself.”
“Why not?”
At his question, she almost laughed out loud. “Because it’s for couples. Everything about that trip is going to be set up for pairs. What am I supposed to do at the paint and sip activity?”
“Paint two canvases and indulge in two glasses of wine, of course.”
Bridget did laugh at that. “Somehow I don’t think they’d approve.”
“Who cares what they think? You’re there for you. No one else.” Foster’s view of the situation was so different from Kyle’s that Bridget couldn’t help but compare the two. Foster was the kind of guy who lived life to the fullest. Like Kyle, he was wealthy. But unlike Kyle, his family had more than they could spend in several lifetimes. With that money came certain expectations along with views of how life should be enjoyed. Foster didn’t care what people thought of him. Happiness was his priority.
“Maybe you’re right,” Bridget murmured.
“Of course I’m right. Now, finish packing and go do you. Put Kyle out of your mind and have fun.”
***
“Welcome to Sweet Paradise Resort, Miss Scott.”
“Thank you,” she mumbled staring at her phone. Thankfully, Kyle had stopped calling and texting earlier this morning. Maybe he’d finally gotten the hint. Foster, on the other hand, had gone radio silent. She frowned, planning on calling him as soon as she was in her room.
The receptionist continued, “You’re here just in time. We were about to take your companion to your room—”
Bridget stiffened. She frowned at the man before her, flicking her attention to his name tag. “I’m sorry, Arden. But you’re mistaken. I’m here al—”
Arden’s frown matched her own and his eyes drifted to someone at her back.
Bridget turned.
Her eyes flew wide, and a squeal of delight burst from her lips. “Foster!”
“Hello, Sweetness.”
