He promised his daughter the perfect week. Then work got in the way.

Keagan Hunt is a CEO who never fails—except at being present. When he whisks his five-year-old daughter Darcy to a mountain resort for Valentine's week, he swears this time will be different.

No calls. No emails. Just daddy-daughter time.

She's the nanny. She's not supposed to have opinions.

Dani Larson has spent a year caring for Darcy and biting her tongue around her workaholic boss. But when Keagan breaks another promise to his little girl, Dani snaps.

She tells him the truth. Even if it means losing her job.

Then something shifts.

Between ice skating, glitter explosions, and romantic dinners meant for couples, Keagan stops seeing Dani as his employee. He sees the woman who loves his daughter. The woman who challenges him. The woman who makes him want things he buried long ago.

But Dani has dreams of traveling the world—dreams she's been delaying. And Keagan won't let her sacrifice her future for him.

He lets her go. She comes back fighting.

Chapter 1
“That’s right. If they can come to terms with the contract we’ve submitted, then we’ll walk.” Keagan gestured for his driver to retrieve their suitcases from the back of the vehicle while his phone remained pressed to his ear.
“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Stella muttered. “These people don’t like being pushed around.”
“They should have known better than to get in bed with our competitors. Now they’re hurting and they get to deal with me.”
“Of course, sir. I’ll be sure to inform them the contract stands. No further negotiations.”
A small hand wrapped around his pointer finger and Keagan glanced down in time to catch Darcy’s excited, toothy grin. She tugged him toward the mountain resort with far more strength than her little five-year-old frame should be capable of. “I’m sorry to cut this conversation short, Stella. We’re about to check-in. I’ll call you later.”
“Don’t worry about a thing. I’ve got it all sorted for now.”
“That’s why I pay you the big bucks.” Keagan pulled his phone away from his ear and ended the call. He was all too aware of the narrowed eyes from his nanny.
Dani was the best. She’d lasted longer than any of his other nannies had so far and perhaps that was due to her brazen courage. Not many could look him in the eye and tell him he was in the wrong.
Granted, she knew how to pick her battles. There were times when not even she could bring herself to put him in his place. He’d never admit it, but he’d grown to respect her far more than some of the men on his board. She had what it took to go far in this world, but she was still young. Six years younger than his twenty-eight years. He recognized that drive in her because he’d had it himself. A man didn’t become the youngest CEO of his company by taking shortcuts.
Ignoring her hard stare, he leaned over and murmured, “As agreed, you will only need to be on call. If there’s an emergency with work, I’ll have you take over the activities with Darcy.”
Dani nodded, but didn’t utter a word. Her gaze did drop to where Darcy looked up at the two of them and he followed that direction as well. Darcy’s lower lip protruded. Her eyes shone with disappointment. She was bright. More than that, she’d been tested and she was scoring at a couple grade levels above where she should be. He didn’t doubt that she knew exactly what he was discussing but as with Dani, Darcy knew when to pick her battles.
They got checked in and given their keycards. He’d paid for the presidential suite for the week which offered two rooms. A king in the primary room and two queens in the room adjacent. The second they crossed over the threshold, Darcy darted from his side.
She squealed with delight at the mini fridge and the microwave with little packages of instant popcorn. “Dani! Look, Dani, can we have a movie night?”
Dani glanced at toward Keagan but only briefly. “I’m sure we can manage that, Dee. This trip is all about you, isn’t it?”
Darcy grinned. “Yeah. Just me and daddy.” Her focus shifted across the room to where Keagan stood by the window. He offered her a smile and a nod, assuring her that she was right. He’d be spending as much time as he could with her this week.
There really wasn’t a slow season at his company, but February was slower than other times of year by miniscule amount.
Darcy’s eyes shifted to the large windows at Keagan’s back and they widened comically. “Whoa! How high up are we?” She scurried across the carpeted floor and pressed her hands on the glass so she could look down at the resort below. There was an ice-skating rink and trails that led into the mountains. It looked as though folks could take snow mobiles out or go snow-shoeing. This place was probably a hot spot for tourists around Christmas time.
“Daddy? Can we go to the pool?” His daughter turned her cherubic face upward and those eyes sparkled with hope.
He opened his mouth but at that moment his phone rang. Keagan held up a finger, as he shot a pointed look in Dani’s direction. She jumped in as seamlessly as she always did.
“Sure, sweetie. I’ll take you. Let’s go get changed.
“What is it?” Keagan turned away from the girls and stared out at the snowy landscape.
There was never a dull moment when it came to running his empire. One call turned into two which turned into several more. By the time Dani had returned with Darcy, he was still working.
And just as he’d expected, Dani’s judgmental stare followed him as he moved toward the desk in the primary room. He could hear the girls while he worked. They ordered room service and settled in for a movie, all the while he put out fire after fire. It was as if the universe knew he wasn’t on site in New York and it wanted to mess with him.
It was dark by the time he had to call it a night and when he exited his room, Darcy was rubbing her eyes. She hopped up with an excited chatter when she saw him and tugged him toward the couch. But one glance at the clock told him it was too late for them to start another movie.
“How about I tell you a bedtime story instead? I can tuck you in and you can pick.”
Darcy frowned. “But I wanted to have a movie night with you. You promised.”
He sighed, dragging a hand through his now mussed hair. “Tomorrow, okay princess?”
Her shoulders slumped but she nodded and climbed off the couch. In the corner of the room, Dani had a Kindle in hand. He didn’t miss the quick glance she tossed at him, nor the way her lips pursed into a slight frown.
Darcy was too tired to listen to a full story and she fell asleep before he made it halfway through her favorite one. When he emerged from the room Darcy and Dani would share, he didn’t know what he expected to happen, but it wasn’t an angry nanny with her arms folded tightly across her chest.
She was dressed in a white tank and a pair of pajama pants but that didn’t take away from her natural beauty. Lately it had been getting harder and harder not to notice the little things. The way her nose crinkled when she laughed. The dimple in her right cheek. Her long lashes. And the soft curves.
No.
Nope, he wasn’t going there.
Darcy loved Dani far too much for him to complicate things by making the mistake of crossing that professional line.
He averted his eyes from her petite frame and raked his hands through his hair again. “It’s been a long day, Dani.”
She huffed, “Yeah, I’m aware.”
Keagan cut her a sharp look. “I beg your pardon?”
Her brows lifted with mock confusion. “Oh, nothing, Mr. Hunt. I’m just the Nanny. I wouldn’t dream of saying something to jeopardize my position.”
He bristled, eyes narrowing. “Don’t hold back on my account.” Keagan spread his arms out wide. “Go ahead. Tell me what you’re thinking. You must be practically bursting at this point. Lay it on me.”
Her mouth opened, the closed, then opened again. Her cheeks flushed pink. And he thought she might actually back down.
He thought wrong.
